Calculator

The CarbonGate calculator has been developed on a best-effort basis. The conversion factors used in the calculator are sourced from various references, including BEIS Greenhouse Gas reporting: Conversion Factors – August 2017, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Green Home Office – Australia, and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) GHG Registries. CarbonGate has exercised reasonable care to ensure the accuracy of the information but cannot be held responsible for any errors or omissions.

Tree Offsets

CarbonGate has used the estimate that, on average, a single tree will offset approximately 1 tCO2e over its entire 100-year lifetime to calculate the number of trees required to offset carbon emissions. The actual amount of carbon sequestered varies depending on factors such as tree species, location, and available growth space. Some trees may offset less than this amount of CO2, while others may offset more over their lifetime. CarbonGate will work with tree-planting partners to make the best effort to ensure that the correct number of trees is planted and that trees are planted in the selected areas. There may be situations where it is not possible to plant trees in the requested area. In such cases, CarbonGate and the tree-planting partner reserve the right to plant the tree(s) in a nearby location.

Other Offsets

The availability of credits in projects may change over time. In the unlikely event that carbon credits are no longer available in the project you purchased, CarbonGate will ensure that the appropriate amount of carbon dioxide is offset through an alternative project with at least the same verification or quality standard and of the same general project type (i.e., renewable energy or improved energy efficiency). CarbonGate will aggregate orders and purchase verified carbon credits to retire them. This is done periodically. We only select projects that meet the international standards specified in the project descriptions.
